I ment to tell You guys eairlier.
WEDNESSDAY! First ever Charleston Area Ambulance DRAG RACES!
O.K., but this was kind of funny.
I was driving a long transport the other day.
We were heading out of town on rt. 26.
I was driving one of the newer trucks that has the big Power Stroke diesle. Tourbo.
Getting back on the highway after a fuel stop, I saw another ambulance, from another company, in the left lane.
I ended up in the left lane behind him. Just chillin', doing about 75 or so.
As we got a little further, traffic let up and he moved to the right.
I caught up to him and looked over to wave.
It happened to be a guy that I know.
I waved and started to pass, he decided that he wanted to be back up front.
The tourbo said, "I don't think so Tim"...
Now remember, my partner is in the back with a paitiant, so I'm not about get crazy.
I just put it down about another inch, I heard the tourbo whine, I was doing 85 in no time.
The look on his face when he heard the tourbo, priceless. Allmost like that "Oh F**k " look ricers get when they realize they havn't got a chance. It was great.
Before any one thinks, "what the hell was he doing, he had a paitiant!"
It was on a very good dry road, and that particular ambulance is set up for long distance "Hi-speed" transport. Ambulances regularly travel at that speed or higher.
But the look on that dudes face!
I'm sure that he wasn't expecting a tourbo!:burn:

Cool I bought a 79 ford Ambulance from a auction. red Lightbar/siren fun driving around down.

But anywho I would love to own a newer one. hoping the local car auctions will have one. The 79 can go about 65mph without falling apart on the hiway. I am very surpise on how well my 79 ambulance accerates 0-60 (not fast)pretty dam good for something that weighs alot!

But you got to drive a turbo one! Im Jealous:D

When I was in the service we used to race aircraft tugs
(basically a big forklift without forks -inline Ford six cylinder).
We shared the motor pool with 3 other companies and one of those was
"B" Company. "B" Company always bragged about having the fastest tug in the battalion. One night we stayed late and yanked the governor off of one of our tugs and tuned that sucker up.
Later that week we talked "B" Company into racing us again.
You should have seen their jaws drop when the front wheels of our tug left the ground when it took off -they didn't have a chance...
No one wanted to race anymore after that.

We have Type II Vans. E-350 frame.
I carry as much equipment as the "full size" box truck, I use less fuel, get in to tighter spaces, and it's faster.:D
I can even carry two patiants if needed.
One on the streacher, strap one to a back board, strap the back board to the bench seat.
In an extreem emergancey, we can hang a second back board from the ceiling.

Not much room in those E-350's But I bet they fly down the interstate :)

Thats what you have V8 7.3L Turbo Diesel.

Not to much room, but You'd be suprised what can be done in there.
The space between the streacher and cabinet wall in the big trucks is referred to as the C.P.R. alley. (guess why).
C.P.R. can be performed wile the other side is free for the medic to perform other treatments.
In the Vans, the cot is right up against the wall.
But if a medic can't work from the head, or climb over my ass, he can get off my truck. Sounds mean I know, but if were You or a family member, would You want us wasting time playing musical seats?
Get in, Go to work, Fly.
And yeah, the E-350 tourbos will move pretty well.
I sometimes draw an older one, "Old Paint", 1986 pre-tourbo.
The speedometer goes to 85.
At the bottom of the speedometer are the letters MPH.
I've had the needle on H.:D
The tourbos are governered.

B.T.W., I have no idea about the New York Trucks.
My company had a truck go up there on a long transport, they offered to help if they could after getting the Patiant where he needed to be.
They said thank you but they had some ambulances on the way.
I won't post the name of the company that I work for, but if You saw a truck W/ S.C. tags on the 16th. of Sept., in Manhattan, that's the tourbo I mentioned.
No, I wasn't on the ambulance at the time.

The boxes aren't designed for speed.
They have the big engine for pulling heavy loads.
Originally, they were designed to be all around rescue/patiant transport vehicles.
You had all the medical equipment plus all the standard rescue stuff.
It adds up pretty quick. The type two vans, naked, weigh about 4'000lbs. Start adding all the things that make it an ambulance, your pushing 45-4700lbs, the small amount of rescue equipment that we do carry, start adding the medical equipment, crew, 40-80 gallons of fuel, we are restricted from some small bridges by weight.
Running code however, I can by law, go wherever the hell I want if I feel it needed to help the patiant.
That includes parking on your lawn Mr. Chief of Police. :D
(I really didn't know it was his lawn at the time)

...and I didn't know that was his tree -all I know is that I had to take a leak really bad...

Well, He lives on a corner lot.
2:00 a.m. or so, drunk redneck #1 runs the stop sign, hits drunk redneck #2.
Chiefs house, about 20 cops, 2 rescue trucks and 4 fire trucks responded.
That was the only place left.
At the time, I wondered why there were so many responces for a relatively minor accident.

I can just hear his call to the station now:
"Somebody come get these drunk rednecks out of my yard".

"... and you, quit pissing on my tree!"

Yeah, he wasn't a very happy camper.
When he found out that since we were running code, and the emergencey lights were still going, he couldn't do a damn thing he was bent.:D
Cops won't touch me unless they have extreemley concrete proof.
It against fedreal law, and a felony to ..."interfere with an emergencey medical technition wile in the performance of their duties,.....or to seek retribution against so wile off duty.....":D
That comes in handy.
BTW, it is also, at least in this state, a felony to strike an E.M.T., on duty or off. Same charge as hitting a cop.
It's cool now though. He saw that I wasn't trying to trench his yard or anything.
Although we are somewhat protected, we do try to be carefull and respect other poeples property. If I started doing doughnuts or something, that's a little different.
If a life is at stake though, I'll drive through Your Frekin' house if I have to.
(I'll try not to hit the cat. I like cats.)
(They taste like chikken)

It against fedreal law, and a felony to ..."interfere with an emergency medical technician while in the performance of their duties..."
Would you believe that in the state of Texas the same protection applies to mechanics and maintenance personnel involved in keeping interstate and intrastate commerce going.
I never believed it until I saw it in black and white.

capriceman
08-19-03, 02:01
Yes, I would believe it.
It may sound strange, it did to me at first, but anyone who is involved in keeping things going, as it were, has a little higher level of protection.
It might more accurate to say that are stiffer penalties for those who would "stay these appointed curriors from thier rounds."
It makes sense in a way, to have a stiffer deterent.
What if you had a bunch of highway dudes laid up at the same time. Or cops, paramedics, ect.
That would suck if something happened.

I suppose that was their reasoning...

I suppose so.
I don't really know why those laws were made, but I'm not complaining.
I used to feel that if someone were off duty, well O.K., you're off duty, you're on you're own.
But even if I am off duty, and something major happens, I'm on duty.
Even sitting here typing this, I'm still an E.M.T.
Some may that's elitist and unfair, but this time it's unfair on my side. In all fairness, if some goober wanted to take a poke at me, I'd probibly warn him.
Depends upon how much of a jerk he is.
