OK, now I'm pissed off. I was about to do a bunch of work on my suspension; bushings, springs and shocks. Last time I was all set to do this my tranny broke. Guess what happened 6pm tonight? That's right, tranny went kaput! Got my car towed to the tranny place(they're closed till 8am) for 11 bucks through AAA.
Last time it was the 3/4 clutch pack but this time it's totally different. I think it may be the torque converter. NO GEARS AT ALL. No movement at all, for. or rev. If I let the car sit, off, for like 10 min, I'll get maybe a block worth of go, then just revs. When I left it idling by the tranny place waiting for my ride, she started whining, like that buzzing whine from that old AAMCO comercial.
I knew something broke when I stomped it to pass some dweebs on Ave. A in the City, then it took too many revs to get going, but it got to Queens and halfway home before she started shuddering on acceleration.
Waddaya think? TC prob?
This sucks ass, at least I got a warrantee.

do you feel a clunk going into any gear? What about reverse? Likely front pump if it has no gears at all, that's what went in my TH350

I really, really Fuc**n HATE when that happens.
Happened twice in my life. Sucks.
Not being a tranny expert, or any other kind, I think tigeraid's on to something.
Sounds like the front pump is shot. Could be the TC, I'm leaning toward pumpage.
I know a really good fix for automatic transmissions.
T56:D
Hope it's relatively minor.

No clunks, no forward, no reverse. I bet when it got "re-built" a few months ago the guy just replaced the 3/4 clutches and put it back together. It's still on warrantee, let's see if he honors it. The shop wasn't open today so I'll have to take off work on Monday. The whole point of the stock re-build was to buy a year untill I could easily afford a more bullet-proof tranny. Surfing the other forums, there seem to be about 3 reputable online places to order beefed up trannies for under 1500, then I gotta pay someone a few C's to install. It's a drag since I'll probably be on strike in a couple of weeks and can't really afford this crap.

Hey, I picked up my car from the tranny place today. I was jonesin' hard, I missed driving. Time to be happy right? NOT!!
No charge, that's a good thing. The guy tells me he replaced the planetaries, and put in a higher stall TC. I haven't done any engine or gear mods that would would warrant it, but I figure, hey one less thing to change later on. Problem is he couldn't tell me the stall speed. Quote: "The highest stall, highest performance I could find, I'll get you the #'s tomorrow". That's cause for worry. They were closing, so I left.
End Part One. See next post.

tranny, Part Deux.

I drive off suspiciously, but happy to have her back. She drives OK, takes off great but a little soft going into third. I go about my business. Off to queens to get my kid and then to Long Island. In traffic she starts revving trying to shift into third, and by the time I get to exit 29 on the Northern State, guess what? NO MORE THIRD GEAR!!!!! I couldn't even leave it in OD or D, so I drove home in 2nd. Another thing, I could shift into first which should be impossible. These guys really screwed the pooch. I'm there at seven am tomorrow. Doesn't anyone have a clue? ARRRGH!
Don't cheap out! I should've just found the extra cash for a NGH or other such reputable HD rebuild.
I'm still pissed!

thats the same thing that happened to my tranny when it went. I put in a tranny out of a fleetwood and now i can shift into first if i want. :D

I haven't tried it in the Caprice, but every car with an automatic that I've owned could shift into first while moving.
I don't recall wich one, but if I were going to fast and shifted into first, it would stay in 2nd 'till it was slow enough.
But then the '94 is the newest car that I've owned.

The thing with Caprices and 1sts seems to be cops locking out the first gear. On 94-96 there would be a metal blocker which would not let you move the shifter to the first, and that was it. 2 bolts off and it was gone.

I still don't understand why the hell they do 1st gear lock out though...

Got the car back today, seems OK. They put in a new TC. I've posted a Q in a new thread.
