View Full Version : Questions On An 87 Ss Monte Carlo
I'M HOPING YOU GUYS CAN HELP ME, IF A PERSON HAS TO CLEAN HIS SPARK PLUGS EVERY MONTH FOR OIL ON THEM WHAT COULD THE PROBLEM BE? THE CAR IS AN 87 SS MONTE CARLO I'M THINKING ABOUT BUYING IT BUT I WANT TO MAKE SURE I'M NOT TAKING IN A MONEY PIT. IT ALSO HAS NO HEAT, HOW MUCH WOULD IT BE TO REPLACE THE HEATER CORE? THANKS

the rings are shot, its burning oil.
its a big job to fix it. the rings are cheap, but u gotta take the carb off, the heads, etc. If it reaches spark plugs then motor is in pretty bad shape.
Whats the price on it?
I won it on e bay for $710.00 , the guy is away in college but his car is sitting home with his parents. It has about 132K miles on it, the exterior is in good condition but the car has no heat and has the oil on the spark plug problem. He says he drove it daily before he left for school but had to clean the plugs monthly. Is his engine shot or will be?
well
GreatWhiteOn20z is right, the rings are gone.
and you will have to rebuild the engine
i had do rebuild mine, luckily for me it only cost me like $1200
at my shop, if it comes out to only 2k to get the car to run good, i'd get it.
i think the heater is not that bad, only like $200 maybe more.
just my.02 on the issue
Good car...I had an '86. With a full frame and small block it's an excellent project car. You can scavange parts from all kinds of models like the cutlass and grand prix....even some mechanicals from the grand nationals. The rear wasn't the strongest...the GN and cutlass 442 were beefier and bolted right in. IMO great looking car when left one color without all the multi-colored stripes they came with from the factory. Good Luck!

Perfect time to rip out that wheezy 305 and stick a nice 350 in there. Probably wouldn't cost a whole lot more than rebuilding that boat anchor. :D
I've always wanted a nice Monte SS, with a real engine under the hood!! Someday...
WOW THOSE PICS OF THAT MONTE CARLO LOOKS HOT! I MANAGED TO GET NO WORK DONE TODAY AT MY JOB BECAUSE I WAS RESEARCHING THESE CARS ALL DAY. AS A MONTE CARLO ETHUSIAST THEY ARE NO WAY NEAR AS ORGANIZED OR HELPFUL AS IT IS FOR AN IMPALA SS/9C1 GM B BODY. I'M SURE THERE IS A NYC/LONG ISLAND CHAPTER MONTE CARLO CLUB BUT I WAS UNABLE TO FIND IT. I WAS ABLE TO SEE LIKE A MILLION PICS THO, WITCH GAVE ME A LOT OF IDEAS. I WILL BE SWAPPING TO A BIGGER ENGINE. THIS WILL BE DEFINATELY CUTTING INTO MY 9C1 BUDJET WITCH SUCKS BECAUSE I'M HOPING BY LATE SPRING EARLY SUMMER MY 9C1 WOULD BE PAINTED DROPPED WITH SOME NICE SHINY 20'S. MODDING FOR THE CAPRICE CAN GO ON AND ON FOREVER. WHERE AS FOR THE MONTE CARLO I'M JUST SWAPPING THE ENGINE EXHAUST AND A PAINT JOB. MAYBE A FEW MORE MINOR THINGS. THANKS FOR THE HELP AND THE PICS. ANYMORE INFO IS GREATLY APRECIATED.
The 305 will get you into the upper 14's pretty easily. Mine went 15.7 stock and eventually went 14.8 with cheap mods. You got 3.73's already but the tranny is a weak 200r4. Mine tanked on me at 50k miles but had a performance rebuild that helped a bunch. A 5.7 will definitely put some stress on the tranny.
I remember that car in the pic above:) It was some time ago that I was a very nice looking Monte Carlo near my home. I didn't know what year though, so I asked DR2000 and he showed me a couple of pics of different year models on Ebay. I couldn't quite tell which one it was though. Then a couple of days later he showed me that picture and asked if that was anything like the one I saw. And I'm like "Duuuude, that is the car that I saw.":)
It looks like an '86. Take off the stripes and put 255\60's on the rear and it'll look even better.

That stripe on the pic isn't a factory thing, right? If it is, it's just plain wrong.
Yup it's factory...it really candy-a$$ed the looks pretty badly. When I bought mine new, I had to have it repainted black 3 months after I got it. After they shot the new paint, I told them to leave off the stripes. It was a very nice looking car all black with those 2nd gen camaro wheels.
Damn! I kinda like the stripes.
I like the stripe too... whatcha all bitchin' about?
If the stripe were just red, it would be ok. But it's red, then orange and then a yellowish orange.
Kinda well.....uhhh, never mind.
I've been looking in the back of hot rod magazines and I've noticed they have engine rebuilt kits. They are not expensive depending on whitch kit you get. theres an overhaul kit witch is about $85 bucs, a delux kit witch is about 115$ and a delux master witch is about $350 dollars for cast pistons or $600 dollars for forged pistons. I do plan on replacing the engine one day but for now would this fix my problem? Am I missing something, sounds kinda cheap? I take it I'll be spending more money on labor than in parts?
Probably. LM rebuilt his engine, and the labor was waaaay more than parts.
yea
the labor there costs much more thne the parts
i've spent about 400 on the parts
and like 600+ on labor
but if you could do it yourself i'd gladly help you tear that sucker down and put forged pistons in :D
and i think with those it will be turo ready :D
yeah baby TURBO!!!!
