View Full Version : Longer Distance Racing
Several years ago I was on my way back from Austin (Texas) coming back to Houston in my little black Mazda. I was doing around 80 to 85 when some jackass started farking with me, so I decided to accelerate and get away from him.
Well, he accelerated too and we got up to around 110 or so.
We held that speed for -I promise you- at least 3 minutes.
(Probably a little longer). He eventually waved me off and let me go. I kept going for a little bit to separate myself from him then slowed down to a reasonable speed.
(We did make good time getting back, by the way.)
My question is: What's the longest you've ever held your speed above 100?
(not that it's a safe thing to try, but...)

Where I live, in the northeast, I just don't find myself with enough open area to be moving that fast for too long. Too many curves, way too much freakin traffic, and too many cops in freakin unmarkeds. So I'd have to say around 115 for like half a minute.
Mark sure yall got good speed rated tires and know the area if you gonna go far at high velocity.
When I had A4 tranny I kept hitting 120 almost everyday on my way to work. I'd could stay over a 100 for 10 minutes or so, but the road is too damn curvy, so you just need to slow down sometimes.
Also when we were going to DC and back with LM13 we cruised at 110 almost all the way there, at some points hitting 135. Imagine how crazy that looked to the innocent bystanders... Two huge Caprices passing everybody like they are standing still.
Didn't we post a video of that a while back?
The top speed that I've ever went in my car was 141 and that was in a white Caprice. I don't recall if I went over 130 in the blue one.
We have a 98 chevy silverado with a modified chip to take the governer off usually its at 98 mph now its infinate i made regular trips with it to north ms from south ms for school and there is alot of straight highway it could stay over 100 around 110 for as long as i had gas in the winter but in the summer it started to get hot around 220 maybe...not REAL hot but enough to know its not good.
all that just to say i can stay above 100 untill i burn all the fuel
my 83 caprice 305 civilian takes a while to get up to 100 but once its there it can handle it for a while
i think we should bump it up to how long can you stay above 120

In my Caprice,('94 L99), on our way back from Raliegh, I hit 114 I think for a few miles.
Settled at 105 for 10 or so miles.
I posted about in General discussion I think.
Any way, the longest I was ever over 100 on the ground, was in '88.
Arizona, Friend I helped stuff a 455 in a "78 vett, rt. 10 on the way back from Mexico.
Friend was too hungover to drive, being Young and Immortal, I said "Cool. I'll drive".
Right lane, not another car in sight. 130 for about 45 min. or a little longer. Not much longer though.
Looked in the rear view mirror as a small speck became a State Patroll car. It didn't take long.
He had me. Everyone knew it, so I decided to stay at the same speed 'till he pulled me.
Perfectly striaght road for miles, noone else but us.
He pulled along in the left lane, saw the wing patch on my jacket, I was a clean cut short hair type, He shook his finger at me then pulled a way.
He had a Caprice Cop car by the way. No clue as to the engine, but it had POWER.
Friend siad I was kind of lucky, but as long as You're being cool, not weaving, or looking like there's a hard time handling it, no other traffic, that kind of thing is not uncommon out there.
1 hour at 109 mph. I was transporting a car for my boss a 92 Civic (ouch). I got passed by a dang Camry going from Houston, TX to Odessa (9 hour drive). Than a few towns later I got tagged for 74 in a 70 but he let me go with a warning. I can't believe he pulled me over for 4 mph. If he'd only known :p
I'm seeing that high speeds for sustained durations aren't all that uncommon...
Let me stress how dangerous this is, though.
I nearly killed myself @ 105mph once.
I hit a bump and the car started swaying from side to side... all by myself on a desolate road, late at night.
(when's help coming?)

aren't you missing the rear swaybar?
it doesn't usually happen to our cars.
Nah, shoot, this was... 22 or so years ago.
It was in an old Buick Skylark...
2 doors, 350/4 barrel -they used to be called "intermediates".
No sway bars, just dual exhaust :D
Now that I think about it, it's probably been closer to 25 years ago...
Damn, how time flies.
Fun sure flies when you're having time...

In FLA, that nice new toll road north out of Tampa, maybe 10 min at a shot, kept it about 100 and still got passed by a frikkin' SUV, LOL. In MO, the road that goes from the Clark Bridge towards St louis. You get a good 5 min at a shot there, but it's a bit creepy, there are a couple of side roads to worry. Not with the Caprice though, both roads were with rentals, a Taurus(crap) and a MonteLS(not bad, solid).
In the Caprice this evening about 30 sec on 440 in SI, peaked at 107, running with this big, beauty, silver Benz. He stayed behind, wouldn't pass.
I like the way those long sweepers get kinda tight. It's a different world. This is one activity that DEFINITELY requires practice and FULL concentration. Things get real ugly real fast. Be careful.
last friday 114mph for 20 miles in the laser eh nothing special.

Yes. Very dangerous. One mistake, just one, it's over.
Perhaps that's the attraction.
I've scooped several people who made one mistake.

I've hit 100 for about 30 secs in my sable but had to let off when the back end decided it didn't want to take the curve along with the front. Gotta love a front wheel drive car with no weight in the back handles like shit whenever it isn't dry.
ive done 105mph on 440 in staten island in my towncar, which was originally my moms car and shes nuts she said in long island im not sure what part but she got up to 125mph with it

Waaaaayyy back in '86 coming back from Copperas Cove (TX) to Fort Hood in my '68 Camaro. (350/ 4speed) Traffic was al clear ahead of me on a nice late-summer's day and I started to get the speed up just a little. When I looked in my rear view mirror, I see this medium blue Monte SS(85/86?) coming up FAST so naturally I punched it. I'm not really too sure how long that particular road is, but we covered it in a hurry. My speedo only went to 120mph back then and it was BURIED. We're flying down the road with me in the right lane and the Monte in the fast lane, when we start to over take traffic- in my lane naturally. So the Monte gets ahead of me and I drop back and swing around behind him. Hey, we're the fastest thing on the road-no point in actually looking around you, rriiiiight! At this point, I look in my rear view mirror-ALL I can see is some guy whiteknuckling his steering wheel with his face damn near pressed up against the windshield from locking up his brakes!! When I saw that Monte coming, I thought he was coming after me-turns out I jumped into a race already in progress:rolleyes:  :Puke:
Incitatus and capriceman are right. Things can change for the worst in a heartbeat OR LESS. Thank GOD that sheer luck won out over sheer stupidity that particular day! All on s-rated tires no less!:Puke:
89caprice9C1,
This is not directed at you, but the old saying is:

That particular day, he was looking after BOTH!;)
There's a whole lot of truth in the saying that to be old and wise you must first be young and stupid. Or maybe "A smart man learns from his mistakes, a WISE man learns from the mistakes of others."
I apologise for cooling this thread, it wasn't my intention. I read this forum and several others to learn about things that I maybe haven't experienced yet and to help with trouble shooting future problems. If any one out there thinks that I did something stupid-GOOD! It's the ones that don't see anything wrong with it that worry me. Hey, when I was 18, I figured that flying down a deserted road at 110mph wasn't hurting anybody so WHY NOT? That was before I learned about broken tie rod ends, busted ball joints, and complete brake failure.:freak: All I'm saying is -think about the consequences of your actions to yourself and those around you.
Don't get me wrong. I still DO street race. It's just more likely to take the form of blowing somebody away off the line because they were creeping the light. Even then, it's usually less than 60 feet and rarely more than 10mph over the posted limit. My GOD!! I'm becoming an OLD LADY!!!
Haven't posted her in awhile but I thought this was a good story.
When i was 10 or so me and my dad went out to california in his 90 silverado..it was brand new. We live in southern indiana and on the way home around the time he was ab out to come into missouri a little red sports car passed him and he sped up and paced him at 140 miles an hour...We went clear across the state of illinois at that speed. As we entered indiana the car turned off and dad slowed to around 70 or so...about half an hour later dad was pulled over by a cop that says "do you know how long I've been following you" Eventually the cop saw me sleeping and told dad he had been following him for 30 miles and he had been going 10 over the whole way and that he was only going to get a warning.
That's when you tell the officer, "Good thing you didn't see me doing 140 a little while back..."
I still want to use this response:
Officer: "Do you know why I pulled you over?"
Me: "Because I let you."

Only if the Officer is say, Your Brother-in-law or something.
Or if You want to go to jail for the day.
But that is a good line.
