View Full Version : power window lagging/not going down
hey guys, my power windows have been acting up a bit, particularily the driver side... it goes down about 1/3 of the way and then begins to squeak and creek and slow to a stop... if I so much as brush my hand against it, it immediately goes down as normal and everything is fine. So it's not life and death, but it might get worse... anyone had experience with this, and how do I lubricate it? Someone suggested silicone spray right on the glass?

I've got a similar problem on that same window but a little more severe. Most times it goes down and stops before it reaches the bottom. I ususally have to push the top of the glass to get it all the way down. Then when I push the button to roll up, it most times only goes up like 3 to 4 inches. In order to get it up, I have to push the button and push up on the glass with alot of pressure using the palm of my hand at the same time. This is very annoying especially on long trips with toll booths and at drive throughs. I'de give anything to fix this. I tore the paneling off to give it a look this weekend and everything looked ok from what I could tell. The sheet metal is largely in the way. I'm thinking the motor may have just worn out and I need to replace it. Oh and that express down shit is annoying.

I agree, most of the time 'express down' does suck. Both front windows are a bit sticky, and they come up dirty. The driver side slider finally broke, so I bought the fix kit from the SSuperstore. Haven't done the fix yet. Gotta replace the sliders on both windows, clean out the doors and try silicone on the rubber that the windows slide in.
From what I've read,if your windows are funky, the sliders are probably broke, even if they still kinda work.
Anybody in Brooklyn wanna get together for a 'wrenching' party? Meet in a parking lot with a sixpack and do some fixin? I'm not exactly mr social, but I bet it would be good gearhead fun. Better yet, meet with the Long Island ImpSS guys outside of a Hooters!
I've got a broken slider on one of my rear windows. I haven't started considering fixing it yet. Sometimes for me when I know what exactly the problem is - it doesn't bother me much. When I don't know what's going on - that will drive me crazy.
P.S. We should set up a meet either way. We haven't done it once this year yet. Last year we had tons.
"I'm thinking the motor may have just worn out and I need to replace it."
I was going to say that sounds very plausible. I had a Ford that had some of the same problems you all are describing. I replaced the motor and it fixed it.
Of course, when I replaced the motor the sliders were permenently attached -so new sliders could be the solution as well.
How's that for a definite answer?

yup that would be a definete fix. May not be most cost beneficial though. I was looking at it last weekend and am wondering if the sliders are the horizontal plastic grooves at the bottom that the arms that push and pull the windows run along? Or are they the vertical grooves along both sides of the windows? I am talking about for the front windows. Mine seem to be fine, the horizontal ones, and are still greased. I think I might go for the motor first on the front window. The back window I know is definetely just the sliders popping out the track causing the window to jacknife.
er I just noticed, it's not my track, it's the rubber trim that the window goes down through. It's actually getting caught by the window and being folded inward and down! so it appears I DO need to lube it that way... but what do I use? What's the stuff the put on those little packets that come with windshield wipers? That would prolly work perfect!
I'm wondering if a little silicone spray might work best in your case...
it was suggested, I may give it a try...
Those little sliders on the bottom of the windows ARE replaceable withthe rollers offered by the GM dealers, no matter what they tell ya'll. I have done plenty of RoadMasters, Caprices and Fleetwoods.... so use the cheaper alternative. Don't get suckered into a whole regulator assembly.
I've had that problem before.. I took the electric motor out and dis-assembled it..then either cleaned out the small pieces of nylon plastic gears or replaced the gears in the motors..
