i bought my caprice about 3 weeks ago now, and it was the 9C1 which was then sold to sassy cab where it was til i bought it. she has about 349k on her but with a newer motor, rebuilt tranny, and new rearend, the drive train made it worth the $900 i paid. i decided to tune it up, new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, i did the plug wires first, drove it a few days, and then today i did the rest, now it seems to run fine when you're driving it, but at an idle sometimes it acts like the old carb's do when it kicks down, but it idles so low it dies then. and then sometimes when i start the thing it smokes like its running too rich. and on top of it all the Service Engine Soon light came on. The car has great oil pressure, isn't overheating, and the plug's firing order is correct. is there a sensor i knocked loose while changing the plugs? or something someone has done before? because it was fine before i messed with it. Also, the plugs, cap and rotor, were in horrible shape. the gap on the plugs was huge because of wear ( a little over .054 ) and the contact points on the cap were scarred pretty bad, and so was the rotor. but the car ran fine. Had they timed it to compensate for the worn parts?
any help would be greatly appreciated

okay.... so this doesn't seem to work, i'll try this.... My chilton tells me to gap plugs at .035 i know most electronic ignitions need larger gaps. What do you guys gap your 350 ( 5.7 ) motors plugs at? i thought it should be wider, as my old plugs were considerably wider gapped, but leave it to me to follow directions.... The motor has been replaced but its still a TBI motor, and a 350

turns out the gap was fine, but there was a vacuum line that got pulled off when i pulled out my distributor cap, runs fine now
