Was looking to buy a 1993 CHEVROLET CAPRICE SS, Impala look a like, 5.7 V8, 9ci
The guy said it needs some work done on tha transmission though...he said it runs fine until you try and shift gears it'll do 45 at most...wont shift into 3rd or 4th gear....
I was seriously thinking about buying this car, but not sure if I want a car with this type of transmission issue...was wondering what anyone thinks this will cost to get something like this fixed...
This will be my first car and I dont even know much about cars...wut is a 9ci or 9c1 anyway?
9C1 means police package. It sounds like you will need to replace the transmission. Personally I wouldn't buy the car

the car has the 4l60E trans in it, and that is the most common failure, the no 3rd or 4th. the cause is generaly the 3/4 clutch pack in the trans has failed. it is repairable, and can be done by someone with some mechanical ability, but it is tedious and time consuming. i love to build trannies, and specialize in the 700r4 and 4l60e trans. if you buy the car, don't replace it with a generic auto parts store trans, they are junk out of the box. instead go with a JET trans, or find a good local rebuilder, and i can give you a list of parts to use to make a very good trans with a bunch of extra strength, quicker shifting, and better life span.

Not to dispute what our resident expert said, I'd take His word on trannys over any one else I know, but another less expensive option, short term any way, get a 4l60e from a salvage yard. Replace the filter and fluid, pop 'er in, off Ya go.
You can be working on the coustom tranny and still have the car to drive.
Get her going. Have some fun. Then see what coustoms You want.
I would definatley go with what gmtech said for the tranny though, when You can.
I'll be looking for that list as well.
I have a tranny issue myself, but I'd like to say welcome to both of You before I start asking for stuff.
It's good to have a pro here.
It's always good to have someone who admitts they don't know alot about cars.
I've been working on cars, sometimes for a living, better than 20 years.
Long enough to know that I really don't know s**t.
Welcome Guys.

so a used trans does seem like a good option, it will allow you time to repair your takeout at your own leisure. when i get back to work on monday, i will make a list of some good upgrades and part numbers that i have personally installed. stay tuned, it may take a couple of days, does anyone know if i can attach a document to this that has all that info on it??
Go for the manual trans. You can do all sorts of crazy stuff with it and it won't cost as much to replace as an auotmatic. It puts more power to the wheels and gets better gas mileage. Unless of course your just too lazy to shift. Remember, what ever power upgbraded to perform to your car only a small part of it is getting through that slush box.

I've only converted an automatic to manual once.
Kind of hard to get the dlutch positioned correctly, but it woked out in the end.
I've heard several people say that You'll always have problems with the clutch.
Loke I said, I only did that one car. A Mustang, years agoe.
Wasn't my car, but as far as I know it still runs.
I got lucky though. We could see the markings where the clutch bracket would have been installed at the factory, just welded it right there. Hard to get at.
Put a bolt through, I didn't trust my welding skills at the time.:D
This company sells a kit that makes the conversion alot easier, but it's probably still alot of work. It's probably only worth it if your fanatical about your car.

lol think i'll stick with the manual....
i doubt i would have the time to do that anyway..nor do i have the know-how...but yea...I heard the trans would cost about $600-700....
CapriceKing, if youre in lanham lookin for a caprice, you should check out route 1 away from college park towards anne arundel county. theres a dearlership that usually has some LT1's. i think theyre around 4500 cash and 5500 financing.
