View Full Version : Neon Lights
I got 10" sound activated neon light for xmas. Now I'm thinking of the best way to wire it. Basically I'd want it to be on only when stereo is on.
I'm thinking if it would be ok to use the wire that goes from head unit to the amps to tell them when to power up. I could take that wire, connect it to relay, and then pull the power from the batter to the relay. Would it be too much for that wire to handle, or no?
Another way I could do would be just connecting onto on of the empty spaces in the fuse box, and have neon on when the car is on, which is ok too.
Does anyone know what fuse should I use with that thing? 5, 10, 15?
Thanks :).
Ok. 3 hours of work, really nicely installed light :).
I mounted it under the rear seat, so it doesn't annoy the driver, and rear seat passengers get a feeling like the are in the club :). The neon lights up the backs of front seat, and all of the floor. Looks really nice.
I didn't want to add any ugly buttons to the dash, so I decided to use the button on the right side of the stereo which was used to turn of the speedometer (when cop was hiding in the bushes). So I thought it would have 2 wires, one with power, and other going somewhere on the speedo. Turns out it has 6 wires. Two for button lighting (+ and -), two for permanent power (+ and -), one wire with power when the car is on, and another to which the power is translated when you press the button. I guess the permanent power is for button to remember which state it is in. It seems not be analog. So I just cut off the wire going to the speedo, and pulled the wires for + for the light. Now if I get annoyed by it, I simply press the button on the dash, it goes off. Finally that button is useful. I guess when I do the camaro cluster swap I won't need km/mph, and trip buttons either. Could connect fog lights or something on them. Those are really nice buttons.
I took a couple of pics during install, but I forgot to take a pic of the light in place. I'll do it soon, and post here.
Here's a pic of dash taken appart, and you can see the button hanging (the one I used).
I have used the power ant wire from the radio to activate items when the radio is on. I wire it to a relay for higher load items but it holds its own as power ant's draw a lot to run.
Nice radio. how is it. Im considering buying that one and replace my older sony.

The radio is pretty cool. There is nothing I don't like about it.
However mine has only 1 pre amped output. Since I've put in 2 amps to work the innter speakers, and the woofers, I can't adjust the fading. Turns out I needed a head unit with 3 pre amped outs (front, rear, and woofers). Oh, well, there is always a next time...
