View Full Version : exhaust manifold broken bolts
i have a 95 chevy caprice
there was noise coming from the engine
it turns out that
on the Passenger side, a bolt broke from
the exhaust manifold
Is there an easy fix for this?
I have a Vehicle Emission Test coming up,
will i pass it with this problem?
any pointers?
It's a pretty common problem. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix. You can try drill it out using an angle drill but there is not much space on the passenger side.
The other option would be to weld a nut to the broken bolt and screw it out with vice grips.

It depends on how far into the manifold the bolt is broken.
If You think that there will be enough room, You can use some liqued wrench type stuff on the rest of the bolts and remove the manifold.
You don't really have to take it out of the car, though that may prove to be eaiser.
If You move the manifold off the broken bolt enough to get two nuts on there, you can remove the broken bolt useing the second,(inner) nut.
Or if there is enough exposed thread already, get a nut that fits, now it's a stud.
I'm not sure about where You live, but the last time I took a vehicle for emmission inspection, (in Md.), they didn't even look at anything.
They just put a sensor in the tail pipe and told me to make sure it's in park and floor it for 30 seconds.
i live in Chicago, IL
Before there use to be a ding, ding, ding
that ended and now there is just a hole, where the bolt
used to be.. should i just get a grade 8 bolt and screw it in?
if so does Autozone have it?
how wide is the bolt, length, the thread size?
i dunno how to read bolt sizes.
Thanks
It sounds like a great excuse to ditch the manifold and install full length headers (If it's applicable).
Yeah, I'd say Grade 8 or better.
As far as size... It might be easiest just to remove another bolt and take it with you.
Just make sure it's from a place that's not only easy to remove and replace, but also where the manifold is of equal thickness as where the missing bolt is from -to make sure you get the right length.
does anyone out there know where i can find
this bolt?
online
if in the hardware store is there a number..
i already know its grade 8
can anyone tell me more info
Why not go to the dealer?
It may be a tad more expensive, but you won't pay anything more than about a buck or two more and you'll be absolutely sure you've got the right size, strength and length.
As far as I'm concerned, that little bit extra would be worth it if I had any worries about getting the right part.

Since you really don't have a clue, I'll explain. Holding down the 'shift' key and then pressing any of the letter keys will make those letters capitalized or upper case. Try it.
Gotta give the guy credit, he's taking the harrasing A LOT better then most new people do!

It makes it difficult to help you out if we have wade through all sorts of B.S. like that.
But don't take it personally, we also give grief to those who write six paragraphs with no spaces or puncuation.
If you want our help you're going to have to make your posts easier to read.
