View Full Version : I got 'killled'
Don't know if this really counts, but here's what happened:
I drive to work every day 70 miles each way. I'm doing this now for about 8 months every single day of the work week (not on weekends). And every single time I put my V1 on the windshield, and let her rip.
Well, today for some un-fucking-know reason, I figured: it's too freaking cold for me to move, so I won't put the detector on. Besides, 8 months, and nothing ever happened.
I wasn't going really fast this time, but when I had only 1 exit to go in NYS I flew past a cop sitting on the side road with a radar on. I was doing around 90. By the time I saw him I clearly knew that he got me, and the first thing that came to my mind was to push on the gas even harder, which I did, which got me fast into triple digits. I mean the guy was in a crown vic, and if I wanted he'd never catch up, considering that he'd have to go from 0. I had one more exit to go in NY, and then there is CT. But then I either came to my senses, or in fact lost em. I decided to actually slow down, and waited for him to catch up, and proceed to pull over... And you know how that story ends. 82 in 55.
Now that will teach me a lesson. Never ever be too lazy to put your trusty detector on. I had not gotten a single speeding ticket since I had it, and now this. Never will I make the same mistake.
Ok, now for the poll:
who thinks I should've made a run for the state border? Considering that he wouldn't catch me (which he wouldn't) what bad things could happen to me? :)
P.S. I probably did the right thing after all... :eh:
Very interesting! You could have ran, but then you think that maybe he has a backup full well knowing that he's in the slowest police vehicle of all time. I bet his backup was at that exit you were talking about or not. Thing is you didn't know. Then you could of did my brownie move by pulling over way before he caught you, and pray that he appreciated it and cut you a break. I did it while doing 90+ and the trooper gave me just a seat belt ticket. I got lucky that time, but if you're gonna run then do the unusual. Like get off at the next exit instead of the one you wanted incase they figured where you were going. Then just cruise the street way to the next exit.
Man! I gotta get a VALENTINE!
I've been speeding on instinct since I started driving and have been a lucky bastard. Luck does run out....
I agree that taking the nearest exit would be a good idea. However, speeding to get away from a cop can lead to some serious consequences. Can't outrun the radio.
Is V1 really that good compared to other radar detectors?

That's not really true. He can request authorization to continue persuit from the state that you entered. If he gets it, and catches up to you, then you're fucked. On the other hand, he probably wouldn't even bother.
So... how many points did u get? And how bad is that for ur license?
somethin like that kinda happend to me once....i was goin too fast, seen cops too late, and decided to floor it for a while. but when i saw them, i was goin bout 105 and saw 130 quickly. i exited, hit a U and went back the other way (kinda worked out great :D)
....it wasnt cool, but i think you shoulda went for it til CT and if he was still chasin, then maybe (just maybe) pull over. hate to say it but thats what i woulda probably done.
You're missing the point guys the road he is talking about is Hutchenson and he was less then a mile away from New York/Connecticut border. So in cases when you're that close to the border what would you do? Would u run out of cop's juresdiction or pull over and be a law abiding citizen?
Yeah, taking the next exit wasn't a thing to do. If I would run I would go for CT. The problem there is that the road is very twisty, so I can't just hit 140.
Today I looked at the distance that I'd have to go, and it's not less then 2 miles. If it would be closer I probably would've gone, but it's still to far when there is a cop on your ass. I just didn't want to appear running from him. At first I just casually going ... really fast... :)
And yeah, V1 is really good. As I said, I haven't had a speeding ticket since 1998 (before V1), and this one I got because I didn't put the detector up. I'm 100% sure if I did, I woudln't have this mini problem now.
As far as I understand I'm getting 6 points. I've got none on my license at this point. So 6 isn't really going to do anything bad for me, but the next ticket might. So it kind of sucks.
I'm thinking to plead guilty and include a letter saying that I've been driving to work every single day for 140 miles, and that I have not got any tickets during that time. And on the date of the offense I was really late to work, and was getting nervous, and it all kind of got out of hand. I'll ask the judge to reduce the points, and I'll pay the fine in full.
What do you think, will this do? Anybody has any other suggestions? I mean as far as I know those counties just go for money. Money is all they want. So if I agree to pay, why not drop the points, or at least reduce them? Eh? Or should I plead not guilty, and tell all that to the judge in person?
Call the court clerk on the ticket for questions. You can go to court on the date on the ticket and speak to the prosecutor. Explain wait you stated on the message board..travel all the time, no tickets, late for work, very sorry, plead guilty to a fine with no points or a fine with 2 or so points. That's how it works sometimes in NJ. But if you wan't to lower those points, you'll have to speak to the prosecutor. If you have no points now...you might be able to do okay... Good luck!
And I don't recommend running. The radio is faster, and you don't want to add eluding onto your charges. And...the police, if in pusuit can chase or follow to another state. Don't be fooled by that rumor that they can't. Besides, it's not worth the risk.
i'm not saying that you should do this but my sister got all the points adn 3/4 of a fine taken away b/c the said teh officer was harsher on her b/c she was driving a little red sports car(96 baretta z26). its just a suggestion

Yeah, and in DR's case, the cop was harsh on him because he was JEALOUS!!! Yeah!
well dr definately knows what i would say about his poll.
that sux that you got the ticket man. but if you were pretty sure that he saw your plates, then you did the right thing about pulling over.
if i was running i'd grab the first exit in ct. hide my car somewhere behind a gas station or something and go hide in the bushes and watch steam come off my skin (due to all the adrenaline rushing through my body):D.

Just finally read this post.
Not sure about New England, but in the south that cop could have kept right on Your ass.
It's called shared juristdiction I believe. In "Hot Pursuit",He can follow You to California if he has enough gas.
He would have tuned his radio to the common freq., advised ct. dispatch of the situation and been joined by several ct. State Police.
When they caught You, You probibly would have been taken in to coustody, none to gently, and charged with numerous traffic violations in both states, but they could have charged You with endagering the life of a Police Officer. As many counts as there were cops.
Possible 10 yrs. each count.
NEVER RUN. You might get away, but probibly not. And the Police are VERY serious about that now.
When I started driving it wasn't so bad. You didn't want to try it more than once or twice though.
As far as the Court,
I got caught for 92 in a 70, talked to a lawer friend of mine and decided to follow his advice.
The guy before me in Court said "I was late and I was going to get fired if I wasn't on time."
The Judge said, "You should have left earlier...5 points $350.00, Next case"
That was me.
Judge:"How do You plead?"
me:"Guilty Your Honor"
Judge: "Do You mean guilty wiyh an explanation?"
me: "No Sir, any excuse that I could give You would be a lie and an insult to the Court and the officer who issued me the ticket. I exercised very poor judgment, I apologize to the court and the accusing officer, and I will never drive my,or any other vehicle that fast again."
Judge: "Well said. $150 and 3 points, I'll suspend the points if You can pay the fine today. Is that acceptable?"
me: "I love You Man!!"
Actually I said, "Yes Your Honor, thank You sir."
Judges are not, as a rule, stupid people. They don't want bullshit and they have heard it all.
I would just say I'm very sorry, I will be much more carefull in the future, or something along those lines.
Every one I ever saw or heard about trying to give the judge an excuse got nailed hard.
Just stand up like a man and say Yes I did it and take Youre lumps.
Better off in the long run. Call 1-800-ask a lawyer or something like that, but You should ask a lawyer.
Good Luck.

What about all those judges on TV (Judy, Mathis, etc.)?
So how do I fill out the ticket in order to get in front of the judge? Do I mark it not guilty, and send it in? Because I think if I mark it guilty, I'll just get a fine in the mail.
I think these guys are right: while in pursuit a cop can follow you anywhere.
I'm sure something like that has happened before and they've since made provisions for it.
I think you did the right thing and that Capriceman has laid out the most appropriate course of action.
You could probably plead something like No Contest in order to speak to the judge. (and it may take a couple of trips to the courthouse to eventually talk to him -that's how it works in Texas)
DR, call the court clerk's number on the back of the ticket, or show up on the scheduled court date given on the ticket. You will need to plead not guilty to appear before the judge. When you get to court speak to the municipal prosecutor and see if he can help you.
aight
so i got no car, no license, i don't even drive anymore.
you'd think there possibly no freaken way i could get a ticket.
and what do you know?
i pull it off anyway. got nailed for holding the train door for some dude with a little kid. the dude took off, and i have to pay 50 fucken bucks.
thats what you get for trying to be nice.

Holy shit, r u serious? Looks like cops are running seriously short on real work.
Man that sucks... good thing you didn't run though.. remember you can outrun a cop car but you can't outrun the radio! They'll get you and when they do, they'd probably take away your license.
I am not positive but if you run you turn a traffic ticket into a couple of felonys IE: Felony Evasion, Resisting Arrest(?), and something else. The long and the short of it, a 300 dollar ticket becomes 15 grand in legal fees and about a year in jail. Then there is always the chance that you lose it while trying to evade and you end up taking out a school bus or something. Maybe I am getting old, but I'll take the ticket and hope I can get it reduced. And next time don't forget the valentine, because it really is that good especially when against Radar. CJD
