View Full Version : Where to buy a good CB antena?
I'm looking for a CB antenna
to connect to my Cobra 29LTD classic
I'd like it to be mounted to the edge of the trunk right by the rear window. I think that type of mount is called a LIP MOUNT.
Any ideas?
I don't want to drill through the trunk.
I'm willing to spend up to 80$, I need something that gives me good reception.
we just purchased a CB for MR.Sag tonight.
the radio shack has a pretty nice selection of CB antenna's, but if you don't find one there, i suppose you could look for a trcuk stop then.
but i think the range and the reception of antenna also very much depend on the tuning, and the cb.
from my experience tuning does count.
and it does affect both the range and the reception.
I found a good local CB shop. The best one to use would probably be a wilson 1000. I did a lot of work and i think it is the best. It screws onto a base and has a plastic cap to use when the antenna is not on. If you want a little cheaper a K-40 would be ok. But dont go to cheap. the best part of a set up is the antenna. Good luck.
I'm running an Midland 79-290 and a Wlson 1000 trunk mount. Good luck.
I purchased a lipmount Wilson1000 for around 70 bucks. God it connected to my Cobra 29 classic. Now I have to come up with a way to mount the radio. Eventually I'd like a center console.
I took it on a highway to test the range but there weren't that many truckers at that time. I'll have the antenna tuned in to the radio for 10$ over the weekend.
Me, LM13, and MrSag just used the brackets that came with CBs to mount them under the dash (under the tray for smokers).
Look in here for pics of my set up: http://forum.4adrive.com/t39-s.html

And I'm planning to move this to a console too when I finally get one. But so far I have way to many things to stick in it. Don't know if everything will fit.
for now I think what I'll do is get some wood and cut it into a triangle. Put some valcro on both sides, the radio would stick out on an angle very much like what DR2000 has done.
How can I mount my CB without blocking the lower heating duct?
1.
Bolt it to the pull out tray using the bracket that came with the CB radio.
2. buy some air duct material found in auto parts stores or home improvement centers and extend the ducts just a little.
#2 is what I'll do providing I'll ever do the center console thingie.
I velcroed mine to the very rear of the pull out ashtray. It works good so the radio can come closer to me when cruising.
If it's velcroed to the ashtray won't it make the tray slide out when you give it a boot?
On my '95 I had the bracket drilled intot he pull out tray and radio mounted on bracket. Sometimes it would pull out at WOT.
Also for a short time I was running a bearcat scanner velroed to the radio and during high temps (IE summer) the velcro glue part would not hold at all.
I'm thinking to make a big bracket where it would be bend and be supported by the floor and floormat and radio mounted that way, I dunno yet what I'll do.
All I know that even with my little tunning with the SWR meter in the radio itself it works great. For 10$ I'll have it done by a pro @ a store I got the antenna. Also I purchased a nose canceling mike for 20$.
Do those external AMPS they sell at truck stoops for 24$ or so bucks work at all? Are they worth the $$.
I dunno if the guy will want to 'rig' by Cobra29 for cheap. I'm taking a long drive 2k mil one way pretty soon.
My try doesn't stlide out that easily. I don't use it at all, and I have a bunch of wires stored in there for all kinds of stuff (connected to the lighter). So I put the tray in in a bit crooked way (doesn't seem so from looking at it, but the rails aren't inserted right) so it stays put...
yes the tray does come out some at full throttle but i just push it back in doesnt really bug me. I know when i was going to fast now. Also I was thinking of making a little thing of velrco also to hold it closed. Shouldnt take much. My tray also does not come out too easily. The glue held all summer if you clean the surface first with some alcohol. Ill tell you next summer an still see if its holding.
Yes the amps do work. If you are looking for a good radio place for info here is a good link.

I got my radio here. if you want more cool links just ask and ill pull them up.
Most depts remove the ash traay and mount the radio bracket to the metal there, and it looks ok too. (see my radio mount at http://www.crosswinds.net/~cicproductions/cvpi.html )
This was how suffolk county mounted the 2-ways
Galls has the federal hump mount plates for about $19
NYC was using these in their cars before they went to the vision light bars to mount the siren and switch boxes ( I may still have some laying arround from my caps, I'll let u guys know)
Right now im in the process of designing a full center console that will house my CB, 2-Way, Many switches, Siren Box, Strobe power supplys, a little light and a Arm rest (Man I hate bucket seats for that reason alone), I am considering neon lights for floor glow <GRIN>
